Local anesthetic systemic toxicity may affect the central nervous and the cardiovascular systems resulting in seizures, alteration of mental status, depressed myocardial function, and cardiopulmonary arrest unresponsive to usual resuscitation techniques. Lipid rescue or intravenous lipid emulsion therapy may be used to reverse the central nervous and cardiovascular effects of local anesthetic toxicity even when conventional resuscitation fails.
