Research on extending the life span of female reproduction is in its infancy. Ovarian follicle depletion is a hallmark of reproductive aging, but ovarian factors are not the sole contributors to the menopausal transition. Recent research indicates the neuroendocrine axis also plays a role in female reproductive senescence, offering a step toward a fuller understanding of the physiological events that initiate ovarian compromise and reproductive aging.
